We use a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches and tailor treatment to each person’s needs, goals, and difficulties. Below is an overview of the main approaches used at Cyprus Trauma and Resilience Center.

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy is an integrative form of psychotherapy that helps people understand and change long-standing emotional, thinking, and relationship patterns. It focuses on how early life experiences can shape the way we see ourselves, others, and the world, especially when important emotional needs were not fully met. Schema therapy can be helpful for those that struggle with long-standing difficulties, such as relationship problems, trauma or complex trauma, anxiety, depression and self-criticism as well as those who have experienced childhood or relational trauma.  

Using a range of practical and experiential techniques, Schema Therapy supports healing from complex or childhood trauma and helps people develop resilience and healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed to support people experiencing PTSD symptoms after a traumatic event, such as childhood trauma, relational trauma, domestic abuse, car accidents, or natural disasters.

TF-CBT builds on traditional CBT by using a trauma-informed approach throughout. Therapy focuses on helping you feel safe, learn ways to manage overwhelming emotions, and gradually make sense of what happened at a pace that feels manageable.

The aim of TF-CBT is to reduce PTSD symptoms, strengthen coping skills, and support a greater sense of control and wellbeing in everyday life.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a well-established and evidence-based talking therapy that helps people understand how their thoughts, emotions, and actions influence one another. It is commonly used to support difficulties such as anxiety, depression, panic, obsessive–compulsive difficulties (OCD), trauma-related stress, and health anxiety.

CBT is usually a structured and time-limited therapy. The focus is on identifying unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours that may be maintaining distress, and learning practical ways to respond differently.

Person-centered Therapy

Person-Centred Therapy is a humanistic approach that places the individual at the centre of the therapeutic process. The therapist provides a supportive space characterised by empathy, authenticity, and acceptance.

Through a warm, genuine, and respectful therapeutic relationship, individuals are supported to explore their feelings, gain clarity, and find their own way forward.

This approach can be helpful for people experiencing difficulties such as anxiety, low mood, grief, or life transitions, and is particularly suited to those who value a collaborative and empowering form of therapy.

Compassion-Focused Therapy

Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is an evidence-based psychological approach that supports people who struggle with high levels of self-criticism, shame, and anxiety, often linked to trauma or difficult life experiences. The therapy helps individuals understand how these patterns developed and how they can be softened.

CFT focuses on building self-compassion and emotional safety by learning to relate to oneself with greater kindness, understanding, and balance.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness-based therapy helps people develop greater awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations in the present moment. Rather than trying to push difficult experiences away, the focus is on learning to notice them with openness and curiosity.

Mindfulness can be especially helpful for emotional regulation, anxiety, low mood, and trauma-related distress, and is often integrated with other therapeutic approaches.
