About Dr Loukas Nikolaou

Dr Loukas Nikolaou is a registered Counselling Psychologist (DPsych) and Certified Schema Therapist. He completed his BSc in Psychology at the University of Exeter, one of the leading research universities in the UK and internationally in the field of Psychology. He then went on to complete his Doctorate at an equally prestigious university in Glasgow. He undertook his clinical training within the NHS, specialising in trauma and personality disorders. Following the completion of his training, he remained within the NHS, where he worked for several years at Royal Cornhill Psychiatric Hospital. During this time, he developed further expertise in working with complex presentations, including complex PTSD, psychosis, eating disorders, complex depression, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders. He is also a Certified Schema Therapist accredited by the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST).
As part of his work in the NHS, he completed several specialised trainings, including training in clinical supervision, and was responsible for supervising Clinical Psychology trainees from the University of Edinburgh. He also completed training in Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) through OxCADAT under the tutelage of Dr Nick Grey, one of the leading experts in trauma-focused therapy and PTSD. He subsequently completed further training in supervision skills in TF-CBT, making him a skilled TF-CBT supervisor.
His doctoral research focused on the integration of mindfulness-based interventions in psychotherapy, giving him strong expertise in integrating mindfulness practices into therapeutic work.
His clinical focus includes complex and long-standing difficulties linked to early life experiences, such as complex trauma and enduring personality patterns, as well as conditions including chronic anxiety, depression, OCD, bipolar disorder, and eating-related difficulties.
Alongside his work in trauma and Schema Therapy, he also believes in using this knowledge not only to support healing, but to help people cultivate resilience. This is an approach he has successfully implemented across different populations, particularly with athletes.
My approach
My approach is integrative and collaborative, drawing from therapeutic models such as Schema Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), Mindfulness and Person-Centred Therapy. This flexibility allows us to find a way of working that feels right for you, supportive, meaningful, and effective.
Care is guided by trauma-informed principles—safety, freedom to express valid needs and emotions, choice, trust, collaboration and empowerment—so you have a calm, respectful space to make sense of your experiences and build lasting change. Pacing is agreed together, with stabilisation and skills established before any deeper work.
Together we will agree clear goals, review progress regularly, and adapt the approach as your needs change.
